Using fluorescent-painted wires and metals with black light (UV light), Xin Qi presents a new installation, Under the Glowing Banyan Tree, filled with insects, plants, and other organisms indoors with no natural light. In Taiwan, an island with mild weather, people often gather under the shade of a banyan tree and share diverse opinions and viewpoints. Legend has it that banyan trees, a symbol of longevity and prosperity, gather souls - in turn inspiring people in awe. Illuminating the ecosystem encompassing the organisms and their environment, the work serves as “ecosystem of light” and creates a quiet and creative space within the city, reminding us of the nature and intimacy between people being lost.

ARTISTS

Xin Qi

Xin Qi (born 1993) studied traditional ink painting at National University of Tainan. She co-founded Fake Fire Atelier in 2016, and has since been actively involved in artistic production and curation. Xin has always been trying to protect the time and space surrounding her from the constant changes in the urban environment and landscape of Taipei where she spent her childhood. Through the environmental art and landscape installations in recent years, she has continued to depict the vanishing landscapes.
