Detail
Bird-shaped objects with flapping wings are arranged in a circle that measures 8 meters in diameter. As you walk through the circle, sensors detect your presence and illuminate each bird in sequence, creating an interactive work that appears to be flapping its wings like an animation. First exhibited at the Amsterdam Light Festival in 2015, this installation has since been displayed at over 10 light festivals worldwide. The birds tell their story of traveling the world and making friends with people from all corners of the globe. Within this glowing circle, people of all cultures, languages, and backgrounds can come together to play and connect.

Artist
Masamichi Shimada
Masamichi Shimada incorporates the natural phenomena that he observes, such as the soaring forms of birds, the movements of insects, the shapes of flowers, the swaying of trees in the wind, and the patterns of waves on the water’s surface, into the concepts of his works. Using sensors, LEDs, and other light sources, he visualizes these phenomena as installation art and has participated in light festivals around the world, including the Amsterdam Light Festival.
