Detail
IT’S A PEACE OF CAKE is a coined idiom that replaces the word “Piece” with “Peace.” At a night market in Taiwan, the sight of conflicting symbols such as guns and doves impressed into doll pancakes and coexisting in the same bag served as a stark reminder of the structure of modern society, where we consume such contradictions unconsciously. Using edible ingredients and inflatable objects—media of vastly different scales—to visualize the process by which our bodies absorb thoughts and desires, this experience prompts a renewed focus on the complexity and fragility of the world.

Yukina Komiya
Tracing the history and memory of migrant families spanning China, Taiwan, and Okinawa, Yukina Komiya is interested in the customs and beliefs that arise when different cultures intersect. Her continuing projects explore the fascination of this intermingling and the emergence of new traditions. Grounded in a sense of human scale, she engages in experiential forms of expression through installations and workshops that use inflatables and the act of “integrating artwork with the body.”
