We are pleased to present Glass Whispers, an installation by Makoto Oshiro.
Makoto Oshiro has been creating works using sound as his primary medium, combining it with a diverse range of materials such as light, electricity, and the movement of objects. Alongside live performances using self-made instruments and tools for playing and composing, assembled from electronic circuits, everyday objects, discarded materials, and custom-built devices, he has also presented installation works in Japan and abroad that explore the properties of sound, including vibration, interference, and resonance.
Glass Whispers is an installation composed of glass resonators and multiple small recording and playback devices. Placed throughout the space, the devices “listen” to the sounds produced by one another, repeatedly recording and playing them back like a dispersed game of telephone. As this process unfolds, chain reactions emerge, gradually generating feedback sounds as a collective. The recording and playback durations of each device fluctuate, allowing them to capture not only one another’s sounds but also various sounds occurring in the surrounding environment, incorporating them into the same chain of interactions.
The sounds that emerge are never predetermined. They continually transform through the resonance of the resonators, the various sounds within the room, and their relationship with the surrounding space and environment.
This exhibition develops Whispers (Cylinder), first presented at Collegium Hungaricum Berlin in 2024, into a new installation. While updating the existing system, Oshiro has also redesigned the resonators, replacing the commercially available glass containers used previously with newly crafted glass cylinders whose acoustic properties have been precisely tuned.
On October 31, Oshiro will perform live using the devices and resonators that comprise the installation. This performance will mark a turning point in the relationship between the devices, resonators, and space, giving rise to a different chain of interactions in the latter half of the exhibition.
We invite you to visit the exhibition during both its first and second halves and experience how the installation transforms over time.
