Detail
Inspired by the kinetic nature of Philip Glass’s composition Opening, this piece employs a staircase that leads nowhere; through a repetitive cycle of ascending and descending, it simply yet powerfully portrays the trajectory of human existence. Here, the chronological order of time is disrupted through a playful exploration of reversibility—a theme akin to playing something in reverse. Across an invisible divide, a figure slips through the void, skillfully manipulating the laws of gravity and weightlessness in an attempt to reach a “state of freedom” poised between equilibrium and imbalance. At the heart of this visual poem lies a progression—stirring and vertigo-inducing—toward a point of suspension. It captures that precise, fleeting moment when the body has climbed to its absolute peak, yet the inevitable fall has not yet begun.

Yoann Bourgeois Art Company | Artistic Director and Choreographer: Yoann Bourgeois; Performer: Anna Berger
Yoann Bourgeois continually challenges the boundaries between different artistic approaches. His unique method manifests as a physical passage that highlights singular phenomena, propelling him toward a vast array of spatial concepts and an infinite range of movement variations. His body of work is the culmination of a lifelong, ceaseless creative process—one he describes as the pursuit of an inaccessible suspension point. After collaborating with numerous renowned choreographers, Bourgeois founded his own company in 2010. From 2016 to 2022, he served as Artistic Director of the National Choreographic Center of Grenoble (CCN2), becoming the first circus artist to head one of France’s nineteen National Choreographic Centers (CCN). Bourgeois pursues a thoroughly multidisciplinary—fusing diverse genres—and innovative form of physical expression, engaging in performances, collaborations, and workshops around the world. His work is rooted in site-specific creation unique to each location, harnessing the energy and inherent characteristics of the surrounding environment.
