Detail
Kim Songhe was born in Tokyo in 1982 as a third-generation Korean resident in Japan. Growing up between multiple cultural identities, she continually grappled with the feeling of “Where do I belong?” and “Do I truly belong anywhere at all?” This experience led her to project herself onto discarded stuffed animals and toys, which she began using as materials in her artwork. At first glance, her works may appear cute and playful; however, upon closer inspection, they reveal an undercurrent of anxiety and a sense of otherness. This texture reflects the experience of living within society while being unsettled by the gaze of others. For her, materials are not merely sculptural components, but vessels that embody stories and ethics through the very act of “picking up and reweaving”.
