Detail
Camouflage is a sculptural work that incorporates the camouflage in nature, such as leaves or clouds. Although the sculpture stands right before the viewer, its surface is covered in a camouflage pattern that causes its contours to blend into the background, rendering the object elusive. By employing a camouflage design constructed from digital data and multiple forms, the work deliberately blurs the sculpture’s outline, thereby destabilizing the boundary between reality and illusion. While the piece is a tangible, physical object, its appearance shifts depending on the viewer’s position and the background, causing its very sense of presence to waver. Camouflage is fundamentally a technique used to assimilate an object into its surroundings; by adopting this quality, the work evokes a sensation of hovering between presence and absence, prompting viewers to question their own perceptions and the very act of seeing.

Born in Yokohama, Japan, in 1998
BFA in Sculpture, Tama Art University, 2022
MFA in Sculpture, Tokyo University of the Arts, 2024
Shibata creates sculptures and installations that explore the nature of communication emerging from the increasingly diverse relationships between people in contemporary society. In her recent practice, she combines the physical presence of sculpture with digital media—symbolic of today’s information-driven world—to blur the boundaries between reality and illusion. Through this approach, she seeks new ways of expressing and reflecting on the conditions of contemporary life.
Selected exhibitions include Teshikaga Extreme Cold Art Festival (Hokkaido, 2019–2025), FUJI TEXTILE WEEK 2025 (Yamanashi, 2025), ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO 2025 (Kyoto, 2025), Rokko Meets Art 2023 Beyond (Hyogo, 2023), and Grounds for Multi-Layered Worlds and Reality at NTT InterCommunication Center [ICC] (Tokyo, 2023), among others.
