Detail
Try sleeping in Roppongi. The city’s brightness does not fade when night falls; the flow of people, desires, exhaustion, and gazes all remain, never truly subsiding into silence. Night is not merely a time when darkness descends. It softens the contours that were distinct during the day, summons forth presences that had lain submerged in the city’s depths, and causes the body to take on a different form.
NEZO-Sleeping Positions is an installation-performance that captures the subtle swaying that emerges between the city and the body, using two beds and two human forms. Rather than emphasizing the exhilaration or festive spirit of the night, this work turns its attention to the fatigue, tension, and unconscious shifting of a city unable to sleep. Bodies placed within the Roppongi night sway, drift, pause, and return.
This repetition quietly stirs the time and desires lingering in the city, manifesting like a form of calisthenics for a sleepless metropolis. It is precisely within the nocturnal light that these small oscillations reveal a different depth of the city. The work presents the gestures of a city that has missed its chance to sleep—gestures born in the space between the body seeking slumber and the city that cannot rest.

Its acclaimed productions, including ”One◆Piece” and ”Les Noces”, have been invited to numerous international festivals across Europe, while The Town Without Seasons has been developed as an international co-production in both Japan and Malaysia. Alongside touring, the company continuously delivers workshops in theatres, schools, and community spaces throughout Japan, and actively collaborates across disciplines with professionals from fields such as gastronomy, science, and traditional performing arts.
By reaching toward what seems just beyond our grasp, Co. Un Yamada explores the essence of human existence through the body. Its artistic practice investigates social instability, the relationship between humanity and nature, and the possibility of hope.
In 2022, the company’s production “In C” received the Excellence Award in the Dance Division of the 77th Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival (Kanto Region).
