Detail
Flora – Au Fil des Villes is a fashion-art piece created to symbolize the friendship between Minato Ward and the 15th Arrondissement of Paris, established through their sister-city partnership. Drawing inspiration from Flora—the Roman goddess of flowers who governs the cycle of life and abundance—and the dogwood (hanamizuki), a symbol of Minato Ward, the work embodies themes of gratitude, the passing down of traditions, and cultural exchange. By printing dogwood patterns onto traditional Japanese cotton mosquito-netting fabric and fusing French draping, haute couture techniques, and French métiers d’art (fine craftsmanship) in floral ornamentation, the piece creates a figure of the goddess that embodies the cultures and memories of both Japan and France. The project incorporates floral artistry by a Japanese artist based in Paris and involves students from Minato City in the garment’s creation; this fosters a space for learning and co-creation that transcends generations and national borders, aiming to visualize the bonds between people and the cultural exchange that will be carried into the future.

Tanei Sayuri / Artist & Designer
After graduating from the fashion school Studio Berçot in Paris, she worked as a designer for Jean Paul Gaultier and Kenzo Takada (KENZO). Then in 2019, she established her own brand, SAYURI TANEI. Her works connect cultures and people through clothing, fusing Japanese materials and craftsmanship with the sensibilities and techniques she cultivated in France, all while reinterpreting them from a contemporary perspective.
Nakajima Miyouki / Textile Sculptor
Nakajima is self-taught in the traditional French craft of parure florale (decorative floral art) which she learned after moving to France in 2017. Her work spans the realms of contemporary craft, art, and fashion, centering on organic forms and coloring techniques inspired by Japanese painting (nihonga). She is currently an artist-in-residence at BDMMA, a craft promotion agency in Paris, where in addition to her creative practice, she collaborates with French fashion houses and architects and is dedicated to passing on her techniques to the next generation.
