Since childhood, she has been creating fantastic paintings that polka dots and nets as a motif. In 1957, she traveled alone to the United States, and won acclaim as an avant-garde artist, shocking the art world with her creative artworks and “happenings”. After her return to Japan in 1973, she continued to be active on the world stage and also authored a number of novels and anthologies. In 1983, her novel “The Hustlers Grotto of Christopher Street” won the 10th Literary Award for New Writers from the monthly magazine Yesei Jidai. Numerous other recognition includes the 50th Art Encouragement Prize from Minister of Education (2000, Asahi Prize (2001) and 18th Praemium Imperiale arts award (Prince Takamatsunomiya Memorial World Culture Award) (2006), In 2009, Japan recognized her as a person who has performed distinguished services in the field of culture. From the beginning of 2011 and through 2012, a retrospective of Yayoi Kusama has been touring major museums in Europe and the United States, and from the beginning of the year in 2012, she launched a touring exhibition in Japan in Osaka.

10-meter-tall “Yayoi-Chan” and her dog “Ring-Ring” tower over Roppongi Hills Arena.
In Roppongi Hills Arena, Kusama’s new giant balloon artwork “Yayoi-chan” stands over 10 meters tall. This is both the “Yayoi-Chan” that Kusama dreamed of becoming as a child and “Yayoi-Chan” we know today a symbol of peace and hope that confidently declares that “The Future is Mine”. On this special night in Roppongi, Yayoi-chan wants to take a walk with her 4-meter-tall dog “Ring-Ring”.

PUMPKIN
One of Kusama’s best known and most popular works is the Pumpkin, and you can find a new version near the entrance to the National Art Center, Tokyo. Glowing in the night and standing 3 meters high, it lends an air of mystery and fantasy.

In front of 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo Midtown, Kusama’s “Footprints of Life” enchants viewers with a floating island of pink material covered with black polka dots of all sizes.

Polka Dots Cafe
Especially for Roppongi Art Night, two cafes in Roppongi will become “Mizutama” (Polka Dot) cafés and provide a delightful place to enjoy the spring evening surrounded by Kusama’s joyful dots. At each shop, the 300 first diners that show a guidebook will be presented with an Art Night original Kusama muffler. (Offer ends when all mufflers are gone.)
