TAMURA Satoru

TAMURA Satoru《Roppongi Machine》

Rotating cogs pull chains along tracks that mark out the three kanji characters in the name Roppongi. The contrast between the impressiveness of the machine and the plain movements of the chains is somehow hilarious.

TAMURA Satoru《Spin Crocodile Garden》

Colorful crocodiles spin without any obvious purpose. Viewers naturally question why a crocodile would be spinning. Familiar motifs are presented in a dynamic manner that destroys their original strength, cleverly diverting their energy into humor.

TAMURA Satoru
Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1972. Seeking to shake up routine sensibilities, Tamura uses common items that exist at hand and produces art works that free these materials from their original significance and purpose.


KUNO Gil

KUNO Gil 《The Antmaster》

Your eyes see a video of live ants projected on a black pattern on which is written countless characters of a prayer to erase past karma, while your ears hear the sound of ant movement captured by “Nano Sound” audio. The black wall is illuminated every few minutes, revealing an inscription. In this video installation inspired by thoughts on oriental philosophy and life, we can see ourselves in the hard-working ants struggling to erase the karmic burden of a previous incarnation.

KUNO Gil (Antmaster)
Based in both Los Angeles and Tokyo, this globally active artist expresses his vision unrestricted by genre in media ranging from installations and performances to ceramics. His work has been recognized by numerous awards including the Japan Media Arts Festival and ARS Electronica.

SHIH CHIEH HUANG (Organic concept)

Creating artificial “nature” with everyday materials, this award-winning artist presents a giant organic creature to delight Art Night visitors. As the air moves through the monster serpent fabricated of huge vinyl sheets, it swells, wriggles and brings a smile to your face.

SHIH CHIEH HUANG
Born in Taipei in1975 and currently residing in New York. Produces “organic” installations that he injects with life and a hint of humor using everyday materials and items like vinyl and pet bottles, and invites the viewer to consider new relationships between things, people and the environment.

A dreamlike silhouette appears in a shop window. You feel a guilty thrill as you watch tale in shadow unfold. In the darkness, the familiar face of the city begins to tell a new and different story with a touch of the fantastic.

IKEDA Mitsuhito
Born in Yokohama in 1969 and currently residing in Tokyo. Graduated from the Graduate School of Tokyo University of Arts. The “by the Window” series of installations consisting of the projection of shadows of people working on the windows of buildings has been exhibited both in Japan and abroad, and now a new urban drama is unfolding in the Hills.

《AIR CUSHION SHOW》

Cushion, Protection, Communication is the theme of this work that seeks to infest Roppongi Hills with people wearing the fashion made of air cushions. When you see one of these strangely clad people, say hello and you get a “FINAL HOME” heart tissue that has been packed in their transparent FINAL HOME coats. The more encountes, the fewer tissues left in th coats, and you can enjoy being a part of the happening! (Tissue distribution ends when supply is gone.)

TSUMURA Kosuke
Born in Saitama in 1959. Director of FINAL HOME and Professor at the Department of Scenography, Display, and Fashion Design, Musashino Art University. Seeks to rediscover and apply fashion’s universal aesthetics and functionality across broad disciplines.

《KURAGE(Jellyfish)Re ▶ birth Ⅲ》

A giant jellyfish gently carried by the currents. With scraps of video tape as its waving tentacles, it beckons the memories of viewers with memories of media. Responding to temperature, humidity and motion of people in its locale, the figure embodies both the humorous and the fantastic. The Re ► birth Ⅲ Project, which is constructed from waste, will appear at Roppongi via Yokohama and Sangenjaya.

SUGIURA Hisako
Born in Tokyo in 1958. Professor in the Department of Human Environmental Science Design, Showa Women's University. Tackles the creation of space that is complete only when people are drawn to it and become a part of it. Currently involved in the re-examination of existing space and site renovation projects.

IZUMI Taro《Skating Rink For Angleworms》

The artist, dressed as a strange creature, tries to make his way through a maze by following instructions given by viewers. The creature wandering among the crowds of people is simultaneously the creature walking around the maze on the monitor. The unique combination of two very different aspects in a single action is expressed in a humorous way.

IZUMI Taro
Born in Nara in 1976, and currently resides in Tokyo. Graduated from Tama Art University Graduate Program, Art Research Department. Creates his signature world filled with a sense of humor using the video.

AOKI Mika 《syringe(IDNo.3 Y.S.)》、《fluctuation of life<Rr>》

In these new works, Aoki creates delicate glass expressions of the power of invisible life, using slime molds, bacteria, and viruses as her motifs. Extending freely and curving gently, their unique forms communicate the power of life smoothly and delicately.

AOKI Mika
Born in Hokkaido in 1981. Creates glass installation works with a distinctive organic quality. Winner of the 11th Taro Okamoto Award for Contemporary Art and the 2010 SICF11 Grand Prix.

Shimura projects video onto backstreet alleys, shop awnings, and even onto the surface of rivers, bringing out each location's hidden charms. Here, he is projecting red shoes and colorful buttons at Roku-Roku Plaza, the de facto front door to Roppongi Hills.

SHIMURA Nobuhiro
Born in Tokyo in 1982. Recent notable open-air exhibition include “Koganecho Bazaar” and “Aichi Triennale 2010”. Based on his exacting observation of the personality of a city, his film works strive to reveal new and attractive facets. For Roppongi Art Night, 66 Plaza in Roppongi Hills is his stage for a film work that interactely engages visitors.

Floating balls emit light in a variety of colors in this collaboration between teamLab and musician Takahashi Hideaki. The moment a viewer touches one of the balls, the others synchronize with it and change to the same color as the ball that was touched. Along with their colors, the balls emit sounds that continue to reverberate.

Roppongi Hills A/D Gallery Maka Ninagawa “SAKURA” now on exhibit.

Ninagawa Mika published a photo collection entitled "Sakura" in summer 2011. For one week in March 2001, she acted as if possessed, taking 2,500 photographs of cherry blossom. From that series, 21 of the photos are presented here.

Art for Life Talk Event3.24

The Art for Life website was established on the basis of an idea by Mori Art Museum director, Fumio Nanjo, to introduce efforts that use art as a vehicle to provide support to disaster victims and aid reconstruction, and to provide a venue for exchanging information and ideas. In this talk, Art for Life participants look back at a year of activities and discuss possibilities for continuing with the reconstruction of society.

The fantastical Hibiki Art Lounge pops up for one night only in the O-Yane Plaza. Flower artist MASSA has produced an artistic space that combines Japanese and Western aesthetics, ideal for enjoying the symphony of aromas and tastes in Suntory's Hibiki whisky.
